Component 3C, engaging students in learning, is considered the centerpiece of the Danielson Framework. Engaged students are intellectually active in learning. Students are developing their understanding through their class work. If there is choice, students select their work through choice and make meaningful contributions. There is a clear beginning, middle, and end in an engaging classroom; the teacher should provided scaffolded activities to students. Student tasks should provide a cognitive challenge. When students are engaged, they their conversations and actions are a consequence of what the teacher taught. To keep students engaged, the teacher must effectively group students. Well-designed lessons include time for closure and reflection.
