In component 1A, great teachers know which concepts are essential to the subject and which ones are more for enrichment. Teachers must also know current issues in society and how to deal with them in the classroom. Great teachers understand which skills are prerequisites to others, so they emphasize mastering certain skills first. Teachers must have excellent knowledge of the content they are teaching and the structure of their subject, so students can learn from the teacher's knowledge. Teachers must also have knowledge of content-related pedagogy and effectively use them.
